The single most misunderstood point: the 50% and 80% figures are reductions of the applicable duties and taxes, not final tax rates. A petrol car ≤1800cc pays roughly half of the assessed total; an EV pays roughly one fifth — and EVs are additionally exempt from TIC excise.

Petrol ≤1800cc example: Sonnai 2024 Model 1.5L Luxury Smart Enjoyment Edition (2024, $11,445 FOB) — a 1.5L petrol vehicle qualifies for the 50% reduction band. The taxable base and final amount are assessed per vehicle by Algerian customs on the declared CIF value.
EV example: Dolphin 2024 Glory Edition 420 km Freedom Edition (2024, $9,772 FOB) — EVs combine the 80% reduction with TIC exemption, which is why sub-$10,000 Chinese EVs are the strongest value play under the personal channel.

Are the 50% and 80% figures final tax rates?
No. They are reductions of the applicable duties and taxes, not final tax rates. The final amount depends on the vehicle value, engine displacement, energy type, and customs classification.
Do EVs pay TIC excise?
No — electric vehicles are exempt from TIC, and additionally receive the 80% personal-channel reduction of remaining duties and taxes.
