The UAE combines one of the lowest vehicle import tax burdens in the world with the region's largest vehicle hub at Jebel Ali. Chinese brands are now a mainstream presence on UAE roads. Here is what dealers need to know in 2026.

Registration rules - check the emirate, not just the country

Vehicle age and registration rules vary by emirate. Dubai RTA does not impose a general age limit for vehicle registration, while requirements in other emirates must be confirmed separately. Always confirm the rules in the emirate of final registration before shipping. Importers need a residence visa and Emirates ID (individuals) or a trade licence plus customs code (companies).

Left-hand-drive vehicles are used for standard registration. Requirements for special-use, classic, or modified vehicles must be confirmed with the authority in the emirate of final registration.

Conformity for non-GCC-spec vehicles

Compliance requirements for non-GCC-spec vehicles (including China domestic-market cars) depend on whether the vehicle is new or used, its energy type, and the emirate of registration. MoIAT conformity documents and a local vehicle inspection may be required; GSO standards include hot-climate requirements, so cooling and A/C packages matter.

Customs suspension at Jebel Ali: customs duty and VAT may be suspended while the vehicle remains under a qualifying customs suspension arrangement (e.g. JAFZA) and is not released into the UAE domestic market. Charges become payable when it enters free circulation - ideal for dealers distributing onwards to GCC, Africa or the CIS.

Shipping from China

Container sailings from Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen and Guangzhou (Nansha) reach Jebel Ali in roughly 15-28 days with several departures weekly; RoRo services run less frequently at 22-30 days. Jebel Ali handles the large majority of UAE vehicle imports; Port Khalifa (Abu Dhabi) and Sharjah also receive vehicles.

Chinese brands in the UAE

Chinese brands are widely available in the UAE market - Jetour, Geely, Chery, BYD and MG are among the most visible, with BYD leading the fast-growing EV segment. Model rankings and market-share figures vary by data source, market scope, and reporting period. The market rewards SUVs with strong cooling packages and high-spec interiors.
