Saudi Arabia is the largest car market in the Gulf, and Chinese brands more than doubled their share to over 13% by early 2026. The rules are clear but strictly enforced - vehicle age eligibility and SABER certification decide whether your shipment clears customs. Here is the 2026 playbook.

Age eligibility - the 5-year standard

For light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, standard import eligibility generally covers model years not older than five years, excluding the current year (importing in 2026 means model year 2021 or newer under the standard rule). Older vehicles may be subject to additional financial consideration and case-by-case review, so eligibility must be checked before shipment. Only left-hand-drive vehicles are accepted for standard imports.

Condition matters: salvage, flood-damaged, fire-damaged, rollover, and seriously accident-damaged vehicles are prohibited or subject to strict restrictions - ZATCA inspects at the port. Every CBT vehicle ships with a third-party inspection report documenting its condition.

SABER certification - arrange it before shipment

Vehicle imports generally require SABER pre-verification and a Vehicle Import Shipment Certificate. Additional conformity certificates depend on the vehicle type, energy source, and import channel. Certification should be completed before the vessel sails - customs will not release vehicles without the applicable certificates. SABER support, where included in a CBT order, is subject to the quotation and service contract for that order.

Shipping from China

Estimated transit time is 14-35 days, subject to the selected port, shipping method (container or RoRo), sailing schedule, customs procedures, and operational disruptions. Jeddah Islamic Port serves the western region; King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam serves the east and onward GCC distribution. Allow extra time around Ramadan and Chinese New Year peaks.

Chinese brands in Saudi Arabia

Changan, MG, Geely and Jetour each sold roughly 8,000-12,000 units in 2025, with Jetour growing fastest on the T1/T2 SUVs. Demand concentrates on crossovers and 4x4s suited to Saudi driving conditions; strong A/C and hot-climate packages are essential.
